Post-Installation Training for Warehouse Automation

Implementation Is Just the Beginning

When you invest in warehouse automation or distribution center automation, you are taking the first step toward higher productivity, lower operating costs, and more efficient warehouse environments. But installing the system and going live is not the end of the process.

Post-installation training makes sure your staff can use, maintain, and troubleshoot equipment in the long term. Without this training, your operation risks downtime, reduced efficiency, and customer dissatisfaction.

Why Post-Installation Training Matters

Automation equipment, such as automated storage and retrieval systems, autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) and automated packaging systems, is designed to improve efficiency and safety. But technology alone does not guarantee success. Your team must know how to operate the equipment, handle the software, and maintain everything.

Post-installation training helps your staff:

  • Operate and understand management systems, including the warehouse management system (WMS)
  • Use warehouse execution systems (WES) and warehouse control systems (WCS) with confidence

Maintenance Training

Maintenance is just as important. Trained staff can handle daily checks and fix minor issues before they stop production. Post-installation training should include how to inspect equipment, replace parts, and prevent breakdowns.

The best time for training is during the commissioning phase. Depending on the complexity of the equipment, plan for several days or even weeks of training. This will give your staff the ability to keep systems running and only call your integrator or OEM when major issues come up.

The Role of Systems Integrators

A strong systems integrator (SI) is not only an installer but also a trainer and partner. They can provide hands-on training, step-by-step guides, and ongoing support and maintenance. Good integrators bring:

  • Experience with different warehouse environments and industries
  • Problem solving skills proven through real-world projects
  • Relationships with top automation vendors and technology providers
  • The ability to design integrated solutions that fit your business process

While remote support is available, your goal should be to have in-house staff to manage daily operations and minimize disruption without waiting for outside help.

Training as an Ongoing Process

Training should not end once your system goes live. With high turnover and labor shortages, you need a plan for retraining and onboarding. Refreshers should be scheduled at least once a year.

Even in facilities with low turnover, continuous training helps improve operational efficiency, streamline operations, and reduce errors. As your system changes over time, your training program should change too. This can happen with upgrades to control systems, new packaging solutions, or better storage and retrieval systems.
